Bing SEO occupies a strange place in the industry. Everyone knows it exists. Almost nobody writes seriously about it. The typical article is three paragraphs long, tells you to sign up for Bing Webmaster Tools, and ends. That was arguably fine when Bing was just a smaller search box. It stopped being fine the moment AI assistants started answering questions on behalf of millions of people — because for a meaningful share of those answers, Bing is not a search engine. Bing is the data layer underneath.
This guide does three things. It gives you defensible numbers instead of vibes, with a source you can verify yourself. It explains where Bing’s ranking logic genuinely diverges from Google’s, and — just as importantly — where the difference is smaller than SEO blogs like to pretend. And it closes with an honest list of situations in which you should skip Bing SEO entirely, because the math does not work in your favour.
The short version
- Bing is far bigger in German-speaking Europe than worldwide. Germany across all devices: 9.18%. Germany desktop only: 16.31%. Worldwide across all devices: 4.68% (Statcounter, June 2026).
- The strongest reason to do Bing SEO is not Bing. Microsoft Copilot and a meaningful slice of AI search surfaces retrieve from the Bing index. If you are not in it, you cannot be cited there.
- The effort is genuinely small. Webmaster Tools, sitemap, IndexNow — under an hour combined, then it mostly runs itself.
- Bing ranks differently, but not radically so. Exact-match keywords, meta descriptions, backlink age and classic on-page signals carry more weight; Google leans harder on semantics. Clean SEO serves both.
- Sometimes it is not worth it. Mobile-only audiences, very young demographics, or a measured Bing share below 1% all point towards spending the hour somewhere else.
How big is Bing, actually?
Market share claims about Bing range from “irrelevant” to “a quarter of the market,” and both camps can cite a number. The reason is that almost nobody says what they measured. Worldwide or one country? All devices or desktop only? Those choices move the figure by a factor of five.
So here it is properly segmented, everything from one source: Statcounter GlobalStats, June 2026. You can pull these numbers yourself at gs.statcounter.com and check them against what I have written.

Three observations worth internalising.
Desktop is where Bing lives. Look at the spread between Germany all-devices (9.18%) and Germany desktop (16.31%). Roughly one in six desktop searches in Germany runs through Bing. On mobile the share collapses, because Android ships with Google configured and iOS defaults to Google. If your product is researched during working hours on a company laptop, the “4% worldwide” figure describes a reality you do not operate in.
Windows explains most of it. There is no mystery here. Edge ships on every Windows machine with Bing as its default. Corporate IT rarely changes it. That is the entire mechanism, and it is also why Bing’s share is stubbornly stable rather than growing or collapsing.
Yahoo! is functionally Bing. Yahoo! Search has been served from the Bing index for years. Optimise for one, you get the other. Add the two together and Germany’s desktop figure passes 21%. Ecosia and DuckDuckGo have also historically sourced web results from Bing, though both now blend additional sources — so treat that as “partly Bing”, not “is Bing”.
The real argument: Bing is an ingredient in AI answers
This is where Bing SEO in 2026 stops resembling Bing SEO in 2022.
When an AI assistant answers a question about anything current, it cannot rely on training data — that data was already stale the day the model shipped. It has to query the live web. That step is called grounding: the model issues one or more search queries, receives results, and writes its answer from them, usually with citations attached.
Which means the question that determines your AI visibility is not “how do I write for AI” but something far more boring: which index does the assistant query?
- Microsoft Copilot retrieves from Bing. That is not an inference, it is product architecture — Microsoft’s assistant on Microsoft’s index.
- Bing’s own AI summaries in the results page obviously use the Bing index.
- ChatGPT search launched on a Bing partnership. OpenAI has since added its own crawler,
OAI-SearchBot, and blends multiple sources. How much of the retrieval is Bing today has never been disclosed — anyone quoting you a percentage is guessing. What is safe to say: the Bing index is part of the picture, no longer the whole picture. - Other assistants use other indexes. Google Gemini queries Google. Perplexity runs its own index. Claude uses Brave Search.
So the honest formulation is this: Bing visibility is necessary but not sufficient for AI visibility. Absent from the Bing index means completely absent from Copilot and every Bing-backed surface. Present in it means you have a chance, not a guarantee.
That distinction matters, because a lot of writing on this topic collapses it into “rank on Bing, get cited by ChatGPT.” Research on AI citations consistently shows a weak correlation between conventional ranking and citation frequency — a large majority of URLs cited by AI systems do not appear in the classic top ten at all. Ranking helps. It does not decide. Indexing is the ticket to the venue, not the seat.
Microsoft now gives you actual data on this
An underreported development: in February 2026 Microsoft shipped the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview, then expanded it in June 2026 with intent labels, topic groupings and citation share. It shows you:
- Total citations — how often your content appears as a source in AI-generated answers
- Average cited pages — how many distinct pages of yours get referenced per day
- Grounding queries — the actual phrases the AI used when it retrieved your content
- Page-level citation counts and a trend line over time
That is a genuinely useful dataset, and it is more transparent than what Google currently offers for AI Overviews in Search Console. Microsoft is upfront about the limits, and so should you be: grounding queries are a sample, not a complete count, and citation frequency says nothing about placement or prominence inside any individual answer.
For many sites, this report alone justifies setting up Bing Webmaster Tools — even if you expect zero clicks from Bing itself.
Bing vs Google: where the algorithms actually differ
An unavoidable caveat first: nobody outside Microsoft knows Bing’s ranking algorithm. Everything below comes from three sources — Microsoft’s published webmaster guidelines, public statements by Bing staff, and the consistent observations of practitioners. Treat it as well-supported tendency, not physics.
1. Exact keyword matches count for more
Bing is more literal in how it matches text. Having your target keyword sit exactly in the title tag, the H1, the URL and the meta description helps more on Bing than it does on Google. Google has spent a decade moving towards semantic understanding — BERT, MUM and everything since — so that it treats “affordable running shoes” and “cheap trainers” as the same intent. Bing does this too, but weights the literal match more visibly.
What that changes in practice: not your keyword research, possibly your title phrasing. A title that puts the primary keyword cleanly near the front is the safer bet on Bing. 2. The meta description is a relevance signal on Bing
Google has stated for years that the meta description is not a ranking factor — it only influences click-through rate. Bing additionally uses it to assess relevance. This is one of the few differences that is both real and immediately actionable: a description that names the topic precisely and includes the keyword naturally does more work on Bing than it does on Google.
3. Social signals: acknowledged by Bing, denied by Google
Microsoft’s webmaster guidance has named social engagement — shares, mentions, activity — as a signal for years. Google consistently denies using it. Whether Bing treats it as a strong factor or a rounding error is unknowable from outside. But if you are distributing content anyway, that work pays into organic visibility on Bing in a way it does not on Google.
4. Backlink age and stability over link velocity
Bing is widely observed to be more cautious about sudden link growth and more generous towards old, stable backlinks from established domains. A link from an industry publication that has pointed at you for a decade tends to be worth more on Bing than two hundred fresh links acquired last month. Exact-match anchor text also carries more weight — which cuts both ways, since crude anchor manipulation is correspondingly more detectable.
5. Bing does not index mobile-first
Google completed its move to mobile-first indexing in 2023: what the mobile Googlebot sees is the canonical truth, and content that exists only in a desktop variant effectively does not exist. Bing never made that switch with the same severity and continues to evaluate desktop content on its own terms. For a normal responsive site this is a non-issue, because both renderings are identical. It only matters if you serve genuinely different desktop and mobile experiences.
6. Domain age and stability
Bing is visibly slower to trust new domains. Fresh sites take longer to build any Bing visibility at all. The flip side is that established domains sit more stably — Bing’s results fluctuate less dramatically than Google’s, where a single core update can redraw an entire visibility curve.
7. What is identical — which is most of it
Before anyone drafts a separate Bing strategy: the overlap is enormous. Both engines want:
- Content that genuinely answers the question it claims to answer
- A clean technical base: crawlable, indexable, correct canonicals, coherent internal linking
- Speed. Bing names page performance explicitly in its guidelines; Google measures it as Core Web Vitals. Our free Core Web Vitals test measures LCP, CLS and INP in the browser if you want a number rather than a feeling
- Structured data for comprehension and rich results
- HTTPS, non-negotiable
- No hidden text, no doorway pages, no purchased links — both penalise the same behaviour
The honest summary: solid, technically clean SEO ranks on both. The differences are fine adjustment, not a second job.
Bing Webmaster Tools: the twenty-minute setup
Bing Webmaster Tools is the Bing counterpart to Google Search Console — free, without usage caps, and with several features Google simply does not offer. Here is the complete path.
Step 1: create an account and add the site
Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in. Microsoft accepts a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account, deliberately keeping the barrier low.
From there you have two routes:
Route A — import from Google Search Console. If your site is already verified in Search Console, you can import it in a few clicks. Bing carries over both the verification and your submitted sitemaps. For most people this is the correct route and takes under two minutes.
Route B — add manually. Enter the domain and verify one of three ways:
- XML file — Bing hands you a
BingSiteAuth.xmlto place in the web root - Meta tag in the
<head>of every page (on a static site: in the layout template) - DNS CNAME record — the cleanest option, because it survives deployments and does not depend on a successful build
We run getmind.io as a statically generated Astro project. The meta tag route works, but it ties your verification to a build succeeding; the DNS route is more robust for that reason.
Step 2: submit your sitemap
Under Sitemaps, enter the sitemap URL. Ours is https://getmind.io/sitemap-index.xml — an index sitemap referencing individual child sitemaps, which Bing handles exactly as Google does.
Two mistakes recur here:
- Wrong host variant. Bing treats
example.comandwww.example.comas separate hosts. Submit under the variant your server actually serves, not the one you type from memory. - Sitemaps containing
noindexURLs. Bing flags these as warnings. A sitemap is a list of recommendations, not an inventory of everything that exists.
Reference the sitemap in robots.txt too. It is good practice regardless and Bing reads it:

Step 3: use URL inspection
URL Inspection takes a single address and tells you whether it is indexed, when it was last crawled, whether anything went wrong — and, most usefully, how Bingbot rendered the page. For JavaScript-heavy sites this is the most honest test available: if your main content is missing from the rendered HTML, it is missing from the index too.
Step 4: URL submission — Bing’s underrated advantage
Google lets you nudge a handful of URLs per day through Search Console, and does so grudgingly. Bing permits up to 10,000 URLs per day per domain, with the quota resetting at midnight UTC. For a relaunch, a shop adding a large batch of products, or a content migration, that is a material difference rather than a footnote.
Step 5: run the Site Scan
Site Scan is a built-in technical crawler — free, and without the page caps you would hit on a trial plan elsewhere. It surfaces missing titles, duplicate or overlong meta descriptions, broken internal links, missing alt attributes, redirect chains and blocked resources.
Consider what that means commercially. A comparable site audit sits behind a paid subscription at Ahrefs or Semrush, and SISTRIX does not offer a crawler at all — a gap we went into in our SISTRIX vs Ahrefs comparison. Bing hands you a competent technical audit for nothing. Even if Bing traffic is irrelevant to you, the Site Scan justifies the signup on its own.
Step 6: the rest of the toolbox
- Crawl control: tell Bingbot which hours of the day to crawl harder or lighter. Useful on constrained hosting.
- Keyword research: built in, free, using Bing’s own volume data. Not as deep as a professional tool, but valuable precisely because the data comes from a different source than everyone else’s.
- Backlinks: your link profile, plus direct comparison against competitor domains. Also free.
- Robots.txt tester: confirms whether a given URL is reachable for Bingbot.
- Block URLs: temporarily remove URLs from the index.
- AI Performance: the citation report described above.
IndexNow, step by step
IndexNow is the most technically interesting thing in the Bing ecosystem, and it remains oddly obscure. It inverts the usual arrangement.
The classic model: you publish something. Eventually a crawler stops by, notices a change, and re-fetches. “Eventually” ranges from hours to weeks. To make that work at all, the crawler has to keep checking speculatively — and on the overwhelming majority of visits, nothing has changed. That wastes your bandwidth and the search engine’s.
The IndexNow model: you publish something and tell them. One HTTP request, one line of JSON. The engine knows immediately which URL is new and prioritises it.
The protocol is open, and several engines participate — Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver among them. A ping to one participant is shared with the others. Google explicitly does not take part; for Google you are still on crawling and Search Console.
Step 1: generate a key
You need a key of 8 to 128 characters, restricted to a-z, A-Z, 0-9 and hyphens. In practice, a random hex string:

Step 2: host the key file
To stop anyone submitting URLs for your domain, you have to demonstrate control of the host. You do that with a plain text file in the web root whose filename is the key and whose contents are the same key:

With Astro, Next.js or anything else that has a public/ directory, the file ships with your next deploy. Verify it afterwards:

You want the raw key back — no HTML wrapper, no redirect. One trap worth checking explicitly: some servers return a styled 404 page with a 200 status for unknown extensions, which looks fine in a browser and breaks verification. Check the status code separately:

Step 3: submit a single URL

200 means received — an acknowledgement, not a promise to index. 403 almost always means the key file was not found or its contents do not match. 422 means the URL does not belong to the host that owns the key file.
Step 4: submit URLs in bulk
For a relaunch or a build touching many pages, use the POST endpoint — up to 10,000 URLs per request:

The real benefit only appears when this stops being a manual chore. On a statically generated site, the natural place is right after deployment. A minimal Node script:

On WordPress you do not need to build any of this: Rank Math, Yoast and All in One SEO all ship IndexNow support, and you only supply the key. Which plugin suits which situation is something we took apart in our WordPress SEO plugin comparison. Cloudflare can also handle IndexNow at the domain level — a toggle, not code.
What IndexNow will not do for you
To keep expectations calibrated:
- It does not guarantee indexing. Bing still decides whether a page merits inclusion. IndexNow accelerates discovery, not acceptance.
- It does nothing for Google. Google does not participate in the protocol.
- Abuse gets throttled. Re-submitting the same 5,000 URLs on every cache refresh, with nothing actually changed, will get you rate-limited. Submit real changes only.
- Every ping spends crawl budget. Bing states this plainly: submitted URLs are prioritised for crawling, and that crawling counts against your quota.
Technical Bing SEO: crawling, robots.txt and the quirks
Recognising Bingbot — and not accidentally locking it out
Bingbot identifies itself as bingbot in the user agent string. Microsoft operates additional crawlers for ads and for image and video search, but for organic visibility the rule is simple: bingbot must not be blocked.
Obvious in theory. In practice this is the single most common root cause behind “we don’t appear on Bing at all.” Three variants:
Trap 1: an allowlist-style robots.txt. A file that denies everything and permits only Googlebot removes you from Bing entirely — and therefore from Copilot.

Trap 2: a WAF or bot filter blocking Bingbot. Cloudflare, Fastly, ModSecurity or an over-eager fail2ban ruleset decides Bingbot is an aggressive scraper and returns 403. This happens more often than people expect, because Bingbot crawls in bursts. Check your access log:

If that output is dominated by 403 or 429 rather than 200 and 304, you have found your problem. Bing Webmaster Tools offers a verification mechanism to distinguish genuine Bingbot IPs from impostors — fake Bingbots are a real phenomenon, which is why access should be granted on reverse DNS rather than blindly on user agent string.
Trap 3: a crawl-delay you have long forgotten about. This one deserves its own section.
The crawl-delay difference that quietly hurts
Google ignores the Crawl-delay directive in robots.txt entirely — it is discarded at parse time. Bing honours it, strictly.
Which means a Crawl-delay: 10 that somebody added years ago to slow down a scraper is now limiting Bingbot to one page every ten seconds. On a 10,000 URL site that is over 27 hours for a single complete pass in the best case, and realistically much longer, since Bingbot does not crawl continuously. On Google the exact same line has precisely zero effect — which is why the mistake survives for years without anyone noticing.

If you genuinely need to limit crawl rate, do it narrowly and with small values — or better, use the crawl control in Bing Webmaster Tools, which schedules by time of day instead of applying a blanket brake.
Structured data
Bing supports schema.org JSON-LD and uses it both for rich results and for understanding what a page is about. Microsoft’s own guidance on performing well in AI answers explicitly recommends clear headings, tables and FAQ sections — structured data is the machine-readable expression of exactly that.

Page speed
Bing names page performance explicitly as a quality signal. There is no Bing-specific metric equivalent to Core Web Vitals, but the direction is identical: faster is better. Images
Bing has always had a strong image search and surfaces image results more prominently than Google does. For visual verticals — recipes, fashion, interiors, travel — that is an underused traffic source. The levers are unglamorous: descriptive filenames, precise alt attributes, modern formats, correct width and height attributes, and an image sitemap.
AI crawlers in robots.txt
If you want to appear in AI answers, the relevant crawlers need access. This is a decision, not a default — some publishers block AI crawlers for entirely defensible reasons. If you choose visibility, make sure these user agents are not blocked:
bingbot— the Bing index, and therefore CopilotOAI-SearchBot— ChatGPT’s web search, which is a separate token fromGPTBot, the training crawler
That separation is worth understanding: you can refuse training use of your content while still permitting search retrieval. Two different switches.
When Bing SEO is NOT worth it
Here is the section most Bing articles omit, because it undercuts the thesis they are selling.
1. When your audience is essentially mobile-only
Bing’s mobile weakness is structural, and it will not change while Android and iOS ship with Google preconfigured. If analytics shows 85% mobile and your audience is in its early twenties, Bing is a footnote for you. Not zero — but not something you rebuild a roadmap around.
2. When your measured Bing share is under 1%
Measured, not assumed. Check your own data before believing anyone’s market share chart, including the one earlier in this article. In Plausible, Matomo or GA4, filter on source bing and compare against google. If the answer is 0.4% and you also have a page taking six seconds to render on mobile, then your problem is the six seconds.
3. When your fundamentals are not in place
Bing SEO is edge optimisation. If your title strategy is incoherent, your internal linking is arbitrary, or your content is thin, every hour spent on those fundamentals returns a multiple of what Bing polish returns. Sequence matters. No Bing trick rescues weak content.
4. When you are hoping for a shortcut
There is a persistent belief that Bing is “easier to game” — stuff in exact-match keywords, buy some social shares, done. That was partly true around 2015. Bing now runs its own quality assessment, and anyone optimising differently for Bing than for Google ends up maintaining two content variants that are both worse than one good one.
5. When you are a purely local business without a desktop audience
The neighbourhood hairdresser, the café, the mobile dog groomer: those searches happen almost entirely on Google Maps on a phone. A Bing Places listing does no harm and takes ten minutes — but it will not fill your calendar.
6. When someone tries to sell you a “Bing SEO package”
There is no Bing SEO that exists independently of ordinary SEO. Anyone selling a separate, expensively priced Bing strategy is charging you for things you already do for Google, plus two account setups you could complete yourself in an hour.
The exception to all six
Even if every point above applies to you, one thing remains worth doing: set up Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Twenty minutes, once. In return you get a free technical audit, a second view of your backlink profile, and — the actual reason — the precondition for ever appearing in an AI answer. That trade is hard to argue against on cost grounds.
How we handle this on getmind.io
Advice without context is cheap, so here is our own situation, including the parts that do not flatter us.
getmind.io is a statically generated Astro site. No database, no CMS, no runtime rendering layer — every page exists as finished HTML on disk and is served by Caddy. For Bing that is the easiest possible starting position: there is no JavaScript rendering problem to worry about, because the full content is already in the HTML. Bingbot receives exactly what a browser receives. That property was one of the reasons we chose this architecture over a traditional CMS, which we set out in our piece on modern WordPress alternatives.
Our robots.txt is deliberately minimal: User-agent: *, Allow: /, plus the sitemap reference. No crawl-delay, no allowlist, no exceptions. On a static site there is no reason to throttle crawlers, because there is nothing that buckles under load.
What researching this article surfaced — and this is the honest part — is that we do not run IndexNow yet. There is no key file in public/, and our deploy script submits nothing. We build with npm run build, ship with rsync, and that is the end of it. That is precisely the kind of gap that opens up when something works and therefore nobody looks at it. So the step-by-step section above is not a retelling of a setup we already have; it is the guide we wrote for ourselves while researching this piece.
What we do consistently: every article passes through the meta title generator before publication, so that the title and description stay inside their pixel budget with the keyword up front — which pays twice on Bing, where the description is also a relevance signal. And we check load time with our own Core Web Vitals test before anything goes live.
Bing Places: the local piece
If you run a local business, Bing’s counterpart to Google Business Profile is Bing Places for Business. Setup is trivial because you can import your Google Business Profile directly — Bing pulls name, address, hours and categories across.
More important than the listing itself is NAP consistency (name, address, phone). When spellings drift between directories — “Street” here, “St.” there, the legal entity suffix present in one place and absent in another — every search engine has a harder time resolving them to one business. That cleanup is done once and pays into Google, Bing and AI answers simultaneously.
Common Bing SEO mistakes
