SISTRIX vs Ahrefs – this is the question everyone asks once they take SEO seriously enough to pay for a professional tool. Both belong to the best SEO suites on the market, but they solve different problems in different ways. SISTRIX is the visibility-index pioneer and, in the German-speaking DACH region, practically an industry standard. Ahrefs is the global backlink giant with the largest link database in the world.
We have worked with both tools for years – for our own projects, for client work, and for technical SEO analysis. This comparison does not come from either vendor’s marketing brochure. It comes from daily work, including the moments where one tool shines and the other frustrates.
The Quick Decision Guide
Before we dig into the details, here is the compressed version:
- DACH focus, visibility analysis, competitor monitoring: SISTRIX
- Backlink analysis, content research, international SEO: Ahrefs
- Technical site audit with a built-in crawler: Ahrefs (SISTRIX has none)
- Budget under €100/month: Neither – look at SE Ranking
- Agency with DACH clients: SISTRIX as the base, Ahrefs to complement links
- Solo affiliate or international blogger: Ahrefs
- Enterprise with a dedicated SEO team: Probably both
This decision is not binary. Many professional SEO teams run both tools in parallel – SISTRIX for the German market and visibility analysis, Ahrefs for everything around backlinks and international keyword research.
SISTRIX: The Visibility Index Pioneer
SISTRIX was founded in 2008 by Johannes Beus in Bonn, Germany, and with the Visibility Index (SI) it created a metric that is today the de facto standard for measuring SEO success in the German-speaking world. When someone in a German SEO department says “our visibility went up 20 percent,” they almost always mean the SISTRIX SI.
What SISTRIX Does Especially Well
Visibility Index: The core metric. SISTRIX tracks millions of keywords in Google every week and computes an index that maps a domain’s organic visibility. For the German market alone SISTRIX covers more than 100 million keywords – considerably more than Ahrefs with roughly 19 million for Germany. This means: for granular analysis in the DACH region, SISTRIX simply delivers more precise data.
Historical data: SISTRIX has stored visibility data since 2008. You can trace a domain’s development over more than 15 years – every Google update, every penalty, every relaunch. Ahrefs has no comparable historical depth.
Competitor analysis in the DACH region: Thanks to the high keyword coverage in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, competitor comparisons in SISTRIX are exceptionally precise. You see not only your competitors’ top keywords, but also keyword overlaps and gaps on a data foundation that is unmatched for the German market.
SERP feature tracking: SISTRIX shows in detail which SERP features (featured snippets, knowledge panels, FAQ boxes, AI Overviews) are served for which keywords, and how that changes over time.
GDPR compliance: SISTRIX servers are located in Germany, the company is headquartered in Bonn, and a data processing agreement (DPA) is available by default. For companies with strict data protection requirements, that is a genuine argument.
What SISTRIX Cannot Do (Or Does Not Do Well)
No site audit: SISTRIX has no built-in website crawler. If you want to find technical SEO problems – broken links, missing meta tags, crawl errors – you need a separate tool. That is a real gap.
Backlink analysis: SISTRIX has a link module, but the database is significantly smaller than Ahrefs’. For serious backlink audits or link-building research, SISTRIX alone is not enough.
Content tools: There is a content module, but it does not reach the depth of Ahrefs’ Content Explorer. For content marketing strategy, SISTRIX is not the primary tool.
International coverage: SISTRIX now covers many countries, but the data depth outside the DACH region is thinner. For SEO in the US, UK or Asia, Ahrefs is the better choice.
Ahrefs: The Global Backlink Giant
Ahrefs was founded in 2010 in Singapore and has grown from a backlink analysis tool into a complete SEO suite. Its core remains the largest backlink database in the industry – over 35 trillion known links, crawled by one of the most active web crawlers after Googlebot.
What Ahrefs Does Especially Well
Backlink analysis: The heart of the product. Ahrefs’ backlink index is unrivalled. You find links other tools do not know about, see new and lost links in near real time, and can analyse competitors’ backlink profiles down to the detail. The Domain Rating (DR) is debated (every third-party metric is), but as a relative comparison value inside the Ahrefs ecosystem it works well.
Site Audit: Ahrefs has a built-in website crawler that finds technical SEO problems systematically. Duplicate content, slow pages, missing alt tags, redirect chains, orphan pages – the crawler finds them and prioritises them by severity. SISTRIX has nothing comparable.
Content Explorer: A unique feature. You can search the entire web for content that ranks for particular topics, gets shares or attracts backlinks. For content strategy and topic research this is worth its weight in gold. You do not just find keywords – you understand what kind of content actually works in your niche.
Keywords Explorer: Ahrefs’ keyword tool covers over 150 countries and provides search volume, keyword difficulty, click metrics and related keywords for every keyword. The global coverage is stronger than SISTRIX’s, especially for English-speaking markets.
AI Search Potential: Since early 2025 Ahrefs shows an “AI Search Potential” score for each keyword – an estimate of how strongly AI-generated answers (Google AI Overviews) might affect organic clicks for that keyword. In the age of AI search, that is a forward-looking metric.
Rank Tracker: Daily ranking updates for tracked keywords, with historical data and competitor comparison.
What Ahrefs Cannot Do (Or Does Not Do Well)
Visibility index: Ahrefs has no index comparable to the SISTRIX SI. The DR (Domain Rating) measures a domain’s link strength, not its organic visibility. Those are fundamentally different metrics. When your boss asks “how visible are we in Google?”, SISTRIX gives the better answer.
DACH data depth: For the German market Ahrefs has significantly fewer keywords in its database than SISTRIX. If you analyse a small niche website in Germany, SISTRIX will find more relevant keywords.
German UX: Ahrefs is an English-language product. The interface is translated, but the documentation, the community, the support – all primarily in English. For teams where not everyone speaks fluent English, that can be a factor.
Price transparency: Ahrefs bills in US dollars and prices fluctuate with the exchange rate. On top of that there are usage limits (monthly “credits”) that heavy users burn through quickly and have to buy back at extra cost.
Visibility Index vs. Domain Rating: Apples and Oranges
A common mistake: the SISTRIX Visibility Index and the Ahrefs Domain Rating are often compared as if they were the same thing. They are not.
SISTRIX Visibility Index: Measures how visible a domain is in Google’s search results. Based on rankings for hundreds of thousands of keywords, weighted by search volume and position. An SI of 10 means: this domain has significant organic presence. The SI goes up when you gain better rankings and down when you lose rankings. It measures output – what Google shows to users.
Ahrefs Domain Rating: Measures a domain’s link strength on a scale of 0–100. Based exclusively on the quantity and quality of incoming backlinks. A DR of 70 means: this domain has a strong backlink profile. The DR says nothing about whether the domain actually ranks for relevant keywords. It measures input – one of the factors that contribute to rankings.
What that means in practice: If you want to measure the SEO success of a relaunch, the Visibility Index is the right metric. If you want to assess whether a potential link donor is a strong domain, the Domain Rating is more helpful. Both metrics have their place – they simply answer different questions.
Keyword Research Compared
Both tools offer extensive keyword research, but with different strengths.
SISTRIX Keyword Research
- 100+ million keywords for Germany alone
- Keyword groups and keyword discovery based on the rankings of existing domains
- Search intent classified for keywords (informational, transactional, etc.)
- Integration with the Visibility Index: you see immediately which keywords contribute to visibility
- Keyword changes over time: which keywords has a domain gained or lost?
Ahrefs Keywords Explorer
- Over 25 billion keywords globally, data for 150+ countries
- Keyword Difficulty (KD) based on the backlink profiles of the top-10 results
- Click metrics: not just search volume, but how many searches actually lead to clicks
- Parent Topic: automatically groups keywords under an overarching theme
- Traffic Potential: estimates the total traffic the top page for a keyword receives (including all related keywords)
- SERP features and position history for every single keyword
Our verdict: For German keywords, SISTRIX is more granular. For international research and for judging whether a keyword is realistically rankable, Ahrefs has the better metrics. Ahrefs’ Keyword Difficulty is one of the most reliable in the industry because it is based on actual backlink data rather than abstract algorithms.
Content Tools: Ahrefs Pulls Ahead
Ahrefs Content Explorer
This is a feature SISTRIX simply does not have. The Content Explorer searches a database of billions of web pages and lets you filter content – by topic, by traffic, by referring domains, by social shares, by publication date. With it you can:
- Find content gaps in your niche
- See which content attracts the most backlinks
- Identify broken-link-building opportunities (pages with many links that return 404)
- Find topics with high traffic potential but low competition
For content marketing teams this is a game changer. Instead of guessing which topics might work, you see it in real data.
SISTRIX Content Module
SISTRIX has a content module that helps with writing and optimising text. It analyses the top results for a keyword and gives recommendations on text length, relevant terms and structure. That is useful, but a different category from Ahrefs’ Content Explorer. SISTRIX helps you optimise one piece of text. Ahrefs helps you find the right strategy for your entire content pipeline.
Site Audit: A Clear Point for Ahrefs
There is no comparison here, because SISTRIX simply has no site audit feature. If you want to find and fix technical SEO problems on your website, you need either Ahrefs or a separate tool like Screaming Frog.
Ahrefs Site Audit crawls your website regularly and finds:
- Broken internal and external links
- Redirect chains and loops
- Missing or duplicate meta tags and H1 headings
- Slow pages and large images
- Orphan pages (pages without internal linking)
- Canonical problems
- Hreflang errors
- Mixed content (HTTP resources on HTTPS pages)
- Crawl depth problems
The crawler prioritises problems by severity and gives you a “Health Score” for your website. For teams that want a single tool for everything, that is a strong argument for Ahrefs.
If you use SISTRIX, you need an additional tool for technical SEO. Screaming Frog (from about €250/year) is the most popular complement. Your Core Web Vitals and overall technical page health then stay in a separate workflow – less elegant than the integrated solution in Ahrefs.
Pricing: The Honest Comparison
Pricing is always a topic with SEO tools – and neither vendor makes it particularly easy to compare directly.
SISTRIX Pricing (as of 2026)
| Plan | Price/month | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Start | €99 | 1 user, Visibility Index, keyword research, core features |
| Plus | €199 | 2 users, advanced analysis, more daily queries |
| Professional | €349 | 5 users, social module, content module, priority support |
| Premium | €599 | 10 users, all modules, API access, dedicated contact |
Hidden costs with SISTRIX:
- Additional users cost extra (exact prices on request)
- The link, social and content modules are included in the higher plans but limited in the Start plan
- API access only from Premium
- No annual discount communicated publicly
Ahrefs Pricing (as of 2026)
| Plan | Price/month | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Lite | $129 (~€120) | 1 user, 500 monthly credits, 750 tracked keywords |
| Standard | $249 (~€230) | 1 user, 3,000 credits, 2,000 tracked keywords |
| Advanced | $449 (~€415) | 3 users, 10,000 credits, 5,000 tracked keywords |
| Enterprise | $14,990/year (~€1,150/month) | Unlimited users, unlimited credits, API |
Hidden costs with Ahrefs:
- Credits are the biggest issue. Every query consumes credits. Power users burn through 500 credits on the Lite plan within a few days. Additional credits cost extra.
- Additional users: $40–70/month depending on the plan
- Annual payment saves 2 months (about 17%)
- Prices in USD – with a weak euro it gets more expensive
- The Lite plan has clear limitations (no Content Explorer search, less historical data)
Which Costs More?
At first glance SISTRIX is cheaper – €99 vs. $129 (about €120) to start. But the comparison is misleading, because the plans include different things. SISTRIX Start gives you unlimited access to the Visibility Index, while Ahrefs Lite limits you with credits. Conversely, Ahrefs Lite already includes a Site Audit and the Content Explorer (limited), which SISTRIX offers only in higher plans or not at all.
Our honest assessment: For the DACH market you get the better price-performance ratio for visibility analysis with SISTRIX Start (€99). If you need backlinks and site audit, you can hardly avoid Ahrefs Standard ($249). And yes – many SEO professionals pay for both.
UX and Usability
SISTRIX UX
SISTRIX is clean, German and to the point. The interface has been simplified more and more over the years. You enter a domain and immediately get the Visibility Index, rankings, keywords and competitors. The learning curve is flat – even SEO beginners find their way quickly.
The German localisation is not a translation but native. Support in German, documentation in German, webinars in German. For DACH teams that is a real advantage.
What annoys: Some functions feel hidden. The content module and the advanced keyword features need a few more clicks than necessary. And navigation between the individual modules is not always intuitive.
Ahrefs UX
Ahrefs has invested heavily in UX over the last two years. The interface is modern, fast and data-rich. The dashboard gives you an immediate overview of your projects, and the individual tools (Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Content Explorer) are clearly structured.
What annoys: The sheer volume of data can be overwhelming. There are so many filters, metrics and views that beginners easily get lost. The learning curve is steeper than with SISTRIX. And the credit system means that with every query you keep in the back of your mind how many credits this is costing – which interrupts the workflow.
Our impression: SISTRIX is easier to use, Ahrefs is more powerful. If you need a quick answer, SISTRIX is often faster. If you want to dig deep, Ahrefs offers more possibilities.
GDPR and Data Protection
For DACH companies, data protection is not a nice-to-have but an obligation.
SISTRIX:
- Servers in Germany (EU)
- Company headquarters in Bonn
- DPA (data processing agreement) available by default
- Fully GDPR compliant
- No data transfer outside the EU
Ahrefs:
- Servers in the US and Singapore
- Company headquarters in Singapore
- DPA available
- GDPR compliant by its own account, but data processing partly outside the EU
- For strictly regulated industries (healthcare, finance, public sector) this can be a problem
Bottom line: If data protection is a knockout criterion, SISTRIX has the cleaner position. Ahrefs does work GDPR-compliantly (with a DPA), but the data processing outside the EU requires additional data protection impact assessments.
Alternatives: What If Neither Fits?
Not everyone needs SISTRIX or Ahrefs. Here are three alternatives for different scenarios:
SE Ranking (from about €44/month)
The budget alternative that can do surprisingly much. SE Ranking offers keyword research, backlink analysis, site audit and rank tracking in one package – for a fraction of the cost. The data is not as deep as with the big two, but for small to medium websites it is absolutely sufficient. Especially strong in rank tracking with daily updates.
Semrush (from $139.95/month)
The direct competitor to Ahrefs, often described as the “Swiss army knife” of SEO. Semrush has the broadest feature palette of all SEO tools – including PPC research, social media management and a content marketing platform. If you want a tool for SEO and paid, Semrush is interesting. Downside: prices are similarly high to Ahrefs, and the interface can feel overloaded.
Mangools (from €29/month)
The beginner-friendly option. Mangools comprises five tools (KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner, SiteProfiler) with one of the nicest UXs in the industry. Ideal for freelancers and small teams. Limitation: the database is significantly smaller than SISTRIX or Ahrefs, and advanced functions are missing. Ubersuggest, from Neil Patel, sits in a similar low-cost bracket if you want an even leaner starting point.
By the way: no matter which SEO tool you use, a clean technical foundation is a prerequisite. If you use WordPress, the right plugin choice is decisive. Our WordPress SEO plugin comparison helps you build the best foundation.
Our Recommendation: When to Use Which Tool?
After years of using both tools, our recommendation is more nuanced than a simple “take tool X”:
Choose SISTRIX if:
- Your primary market is the DACH region
- The Visibility Index is the metric your SEO success is measured against
- You have a team that works primarily in German
- Competitor monitoring and historical analysis are your focus
- Data protection and GDPR compliance are hard requirements
- You prefer a lean, focused solution
Choose Ahrefs if:
- You work internationally or serve English-speaking markets
- Backlink analysis and link building are core parts of your SEO strategy
- You need an integrated site audit (no separate tool)
- Content marketing and content strategy are important areas of work
- You want the maximum data breadth (keywords, links, content in one tool)
- As a solo SEO or small team you need as much as possible in one tool
Choose both if:
- You are an SEO agency with DACH clients
- You have an in-house SEO team with more than three people
- You need both the Visibility Index and deep backlink analysis
- You can afford it (together from about €220–350/month)
For getting started with search engine optimisation we recommend, incidentally, setting up the basics cleanly first – technical SEO, clean site structure, good content – before investing in a premium tool. No tool in the world compensates for a badly built website.
A Note From Our Own Practice
We run getmind.io ourselves and rank it in a competitive niche. In our own keyword research the workflow that actually helps is unglamorous: we start with the Visibility Index to see whether a topic even moves the needle for the German market, then switch to Ahrefs’ Keyword Difficulty and Traffic Potential to judge whether a keyword is realistically winnable. Neither tool alone gives us that picture. And before we write a single word, we run the target page through our free Meta Title Generator and the Core Web Vitals test – because the best keyword research is wasted on a page Google finds slow or on a title nobody clicks.
FAQ: SISTRIX vs Ahrefs
Is SISTRIX better than Ahrefs?
Neither – it depends on the use case. SISTRIX is better for the DACH market and visibility analysis. Ahrefs is better for backlink analysis, site audit and international SEO. Both are excellent tools in their respective strengths.
What does SISTRIX cost per month?
SISTRIX starts at €99/month for the Start plan with one user licence and the core features. The Plus (€199), Professional (€349) and Premium (€599) plans offer more users, more modules and more queries.
What does Ahrefs cost per month?
Ahrefs Lite costs $129/month (about €120), the Standard plan $249/month (about €230). Note: prices are in US dollars, and the credit system can lead to extra costs with intensive use.
Does SISTRIX have a site audit?
No. SISTRIX has no built-in website crawler for technical SEO audits. You need an additional tool for that, such as Ahrefs, Screaming Frog or Sitebulb.
Can I use SISTRIX and Ahrefs at the same time?
Yes, and many SEO professionals do exactly that. SISTRIX for visibility analysis and DACH monitoring, Ahrefs for backlinks, content research and site audit. Combined, the cost is at least €220/month.
Are there free alternatives to SISTRIX and Ahrefs?
For getting started, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free, but only for your own website) and Google Search Console provide basic SEO data. There are no free alternatives with comparable functionality – professional SEO requires professional tools.
Which tool is better for link building?
Ahrefs, clearly. The largest backlink database, the Content Explorer for broken-link building and the detailed link metrics make Ahrefs the standard tool for link-building campaigns.
How accurate is the SISTRIX Visibility Index?
The Visibility Index is the most widely used SEO KPI in the DACH region and is considered very reliable. It is based on weekly crawls of over 100 million keywords for Germany. However, it is a relative metric – it measures visibility in comparison, not absolute traffic.
Does SISTRIX offer a free trial?
SISTRIX does not offer a public free trial. You can request a demo, and occasionally there are promotions with short trial access. The Visibility Index for individual domains is viewable for free on sistrix.com.
Which tool has the better API?
Both offer APIs. The SISTRIX API is available from the Premium plan (€599/month) and is well documented, especially for visibility data. The Ahrefs API is available from the Enterprise plan ($14,990/year) and covers all Ahrefs features. For smaller teams, both APIs are only accessible in the expensive plans.
